We decided to try a little town called Woodgate.
Surprisingly though it seemed a lot smaller than I had imagined. We had come straight from Rainbow Beach where the population was 800 to Woodgate where it was more around the 2000, yet it felt no bigger. There was a newish looking housing estate but during the 3 days we were there we barely saw or bumped into more than a few people at any time so it seemed like the quintessential small beach town. The views were beautiful and the feel was relaxed and holiday like.
On our way into the town there were several signs that kept letting us know about the Woodgate pub and in each one it mentioned that the pub was for sale. For curiosity sake we asked about it at the pub and yes it was for sale if you had a spare something like $8-10 million. He would not consider selling the pub alone he wanted to sell all the surrounding land with it. He had already apparently been offered $3 million for the pub and turned it down. It was in a good spot straight across the road from the water.
There is a bowling club which was really nice and well priced meals too.
A convenience store come takeaway …it was in prime position but was a little pricey. I expected to pay a little more for some things because you were buying it from a takeaway/town store but we had $5 chips one day and between the 4 of us we barely got a handful of chips each!
Family grocer Foodworks type store at the edge of town on the way in- not far and close to the newer housing estate area near the hardware store and it is by far the place to shop if you need any supplies. Not only do they have more of the supermarket lines but are also more reasonably priced and really friendly too.
Hardware store.
We were a quite shocked to find that there was only 1 petrol station in Woodgate and was in the caravan park at the office area. It was so funny to rock up ready to get petrol to read the price and have an instant ouch feeling. The price for petrol at the time everywhere else was around the $143.9 well, here it was $165.9….ouch!
Woodgate is a very lovely small beach side town with so many good point so don’t be put off by the last few comments of pricing.
It was a new thing to see the amount of boats out in one area for prawning and crabbing.
We did lots of fishing, walking on the beach, collecting shells and yes, the girls even went swimming. Aside from those type of activities, which is the attraction to Woodgate, there is not a lot more to do. You can take walks in the National Park. We stayed in the National Park but didn’t go walking through it.
Watch out for the kangaroos…the girls loved seeing them but I’m not too sure how the locals felt as they looked like they roamed wherever they liked.
