Travelling with kids…not a nightmare after all

Have you been cautious of planning a trip or ruling out destinations because you have little kids and worry that travelling with them may be a nightmare?

It is can be challenging when travelling with kids as you are never quite sure if they will ‘travel well’. It can also be the most rewarding and amazing experience for all.

We have learnt from many mistakes when travelling (but also had some wonderful times don’t get me wrong) and quickly learnt that flexibility is key.

Even the best laid and prepared trip can go astray, sometimes with things out of your control, sometimes just with what we call ‘travel craziness’- just the fact you’re away can make us all a little, lets say politely ….different.

Who doesn’t love holidays.

What have we learnt?

We are constantly learning of ways to travel with kids in various situations and countries but let us share what we have learnt so far.

When planning what to see and do on your holiday bear in mind that you don’t need to plan or expect to see or do everything.
Be flexible and expect the unexpected. This can include simple things like toilet stops, food, rest, etc to the bigger things too.
Let the kids know what they are doing each day and allow them some choices in the decisions too.
Another important thing to be aware of if you are travelling in particular overseas is eliminate the need for wads of cash. We all know we can easily be distracted when we are out and about with kids so to alleviate being ‘ripped off’ or money lost or stolen using travellers cheques, Visa/ Visa debit (or MasterCard) or pre-paying for as much as possible before you head off so it is all organised for your arrival such as transfers can help. Just have a little currency so you can purchase the small things that the above can’t be used with.
Have fun! Despite what hurdles may arise remember to try to have fun and retain a sense of humour on your trip and it should be more enjoyable. If nothing else the troublesome issues on your trip will be talking points in years to come.
Most importantly, keep safe! Keep doing head counts, talk about the importance of sticking together and what to do in the horrid event of becoming separated.
