Creating a fun play room for your children is important, but what is even more important is their safety. While there’s no way to guarantee your child won’t get hurt, there are precautions you can take to make this room as safe as possible. It’s easier than you may think to do this and it will only take a short amount of time to get the job done!
1. Bolt Furniture Down
Kid’s furniture isn’t exactly built to be heavy and luxurious, which means it’s generally pretty lightweight. In order to make sure your kids don’t get hurt on a bookshelf or cabinet that knocks over, bolt them down. This will secure the furniture to the ground or the wall so that you don’t have to worry about them crashing down after a tough play session.
2. Secure Windows
Kids are curious and sometimes that curiosity leads to them trying to have adventures outside without telling you. Get latches for your windows so that your children can enjoy the window without the risk of them going outside without you. These are generally easy to install if your windows don’t already have latches on them.
Tip: Cover windows with blinds when the sun isn’t out, just to make sure nobody is looking inside.
3. Cover Electrical Sockets
Too many young children get electrocuted due to sticking their fingers into sockets that are left uncovered. Use outlet covers to secure these in the playroom as well as throughout the rest of your house. They are easy to take on and off, so you can still use them without any worries about your kids sticking their fingers inside.
4. Secure the Bathroom
If you have a bathroom attached to the playroom, then it’s important to secure that room. Make sure it’s left locked, especially if you have a toddler that is just learning how to go to the bathroom. A lot of kids get locked in these rooms, try to take baths by themselves or flush toys down the toilet. It’s best to have them seek your assistance when going to the bathroom until they are older.
5. Get Rid of Glass
While it’s nice to decorate shelves with glass vases and other things made of glass, it’s important not to do this in a play room. When those fall down and break, they will leave shards of glass all over the place. The shards of glass may also cause harm to your child, which can mean a trip to the emergency room.
6. Secure Furniture
Furniture can have sharp corners, especially when it comes to large wooden chests or similar items. There are rubber corners you can latch onto those pieces of furniture that have sharp corners. This can minimise risk of your child getting hurt while they are playing so they don’t scratch their arms or hit their head.
In addition to using these tips, you can also get down on your hands and knees to see what your child sees. From there you can determine what areas of the room would be dangerous so that you can remedy them right away. Doing all of this will ensure you provide your little ones with the safest room possible so they can just have fun without worries of getting hurt.
