Yes you can cook poached eggs without the traditional poacher.
There are actually a few ways to be able to cook a poached egg.
There is the traditional method using the egg poacher. The vortex method (considered the professional chef method). There are a few other ways of cooking a perfect poached egg without all the hoopla. There are poaching machines, poaching rings and even poaching pouches.
Some run at the mention of the word poaching.
Traditionally cooking a poached egg did have a reputation for being hard to get right.

Aside from the many ways to cook a poached egg there are just as many varying recipes. Some recipes include vinegar others include lemon juice. The ingredients you use besides an egg is down to personal choice and taste.
Basically you will need eggs, water, butter or vinegar depending on the method you use.
Microwave Saucepan of frying pan
In a tea cup add 1 tablespoon of water and a dab of butter smoothed around the interior of the cup.
Add the egg and cook for 40 seconds and then for another 20 seconds. Alternatively, use a tea cup plate for a rounder poached egg using the same measures and method as above. The butter is to stop sticking to the plate or the cup. |
With enough water to cover (½ litre of water) add ¼ cup of vinegar, break egg into boiling water and cook for 3 minutes.
The vinegar will stop the egg separating into the water. Stirring the water will help to keep the egg in the centre. |
