Cradle cap is the name given to a condition that occurs in babies.
It is yellowish, scabby patches on the scalp.
Generally cradle cap does not cause discomfort.
There is no clear cause, although it is clear that it is not caused by allergy, bacterial infection, or bad hygiene.
Cradle cap is the common name for Seborrheic Dermatitis.
Cradle cap usually starts as a small patch and may spread over the entire head.
It is actually a form of dermatitis.
It generally occurs in the first 3 months of a babies life and basically is an inflammatory skin condition.
It generally occurs if a child has an oily head.
The crusty patches are a build up of oil and dead skin cells.
Signs of cradle cap
- A yellow/brownish crust on their scalp.
- Redness can also occur.
- Scale-like skin on the scalp.
- It can look like a really bad case of dandruff with flakes
- It is important to note that it is NOT as a result of poor hygiene.
- It is not contagious.
- And it does not bother the baby.
Treatment
As it doesn’t generally cause any discomfort or pain treatment is optional.
- You can rub the head with baby oil, lanolin and leave it overnight to help to soften the crust and then wash the hair and it should mostly come off.
- Try not to pick at them. This can make them become infected.
- If symptoms persist or worsen then it is recommended to seek medical attention.
- Wash your baby’s hair once a day with mild, tear-free baby shampoo.
- Scales can be gently removed with a soft brush or toothbrush.
- Coconut oil can be used as a treatment.
