The age old debate about smacking continues.....
A national campaign that warns parents not to smack their children was launched recently and has sparked the whole smacking debate again. The Australian Childhood Foundation's campaign warns parents not to smack as physical punishment as it could harm children psychologically.
The $2.5 million campaign is backed and funded by the Federal government. The campaign comes only 2 months after experts in QLD called for smacking to be outlawed. The Foundation argues that smacking teaches children that violence is an acceptable way to deal with situations. They believe that smacking can undermine the child's sense of love and security. Children who are smacked can often become rebellious, anxious or fearful.
The foundation believes you do not have to harm children in order to teach them a lesson. However, the QLD Family Association State Secretary says smacking could actually be justified sometimes. They of course do not support abuse or violence against children but believe that you cannot reason with a 2 yr old and a quick smack on the bottom is fine.
