With a baby comes the mountain of things we need to carry.
When we have a baby the list of things to carry such as clothes, nappies, wipes, food, snacks and so on starts to mount up.
This can mean it feels like we sometimes need a suitcase to carry it all.
The invention of a nappy bag was ingenious and has definitely evolved over the years.
Gone are the days of the daggy nappy bag now they are a fashion statement in themselves.
There certainly are some fancy ones with all the bells and whistles and you can accessorize with almost everything if you want a matchy matchy look.
However, at the end of the day, regardless of your budget the purpose of a nappy bag is practicality.
What type of bag?
There are so many variants of nappy bags on the market. Primarily, the main purpose of a nappy bag is to carry all the essentials around, although they have also become a bit of a stylish accessory too.
Whilst being stylish or the style of the nappy bag is something to take into consideration when you purchase a bag, it is more important to have value for money, features and functionality as well as serviceability, and of course a long lasting one.
If you ask yourself one vital question in the search for your ‘perfect’ nappy bag.
That question should be: Does it have room for everything you need to carry?
After that question is answered then there are also many other factors to take into account.
What to look for in a good nappy bag?
- Features: Storage and accessories: Does it have lots of little nooks and crannies? Generally the more in a bag the better as they can hold so many useful things at easy reach.
- Style: They have definitely improved in the style and variety department over the years. Remember those old ones with the baby prints from yesteryear? The benefit of the more stylish bag is the ability to not feel like a walking baby shop but some of the more stylish are stylish but not practical. The more ‘unisex’ the bag the easier it will be to share the use of it with the dads.
- Ease of Use: Having all the pockets and compartments is no good if you if you can’t access things quickly and easily, especially as sometimes you only have one hand to do so. Another thing to take note of is the handles and make sure they are long enough and tough enough for the job. They may need to be slung over not only your arm but a pram without toppling it over. An extendable strap is something to think about as it can not only cover all the usual things but also then can be extended for the dads comfort too.
- Versatility
- Quality/value for money: A good quality bag should be one that outlasts the need. It should at least last for 2 babies so ones that have sturdy looking zips, fasteners, etc and that is easily cleaned or machine washed. Just because it is more expensive doesn’t mean it will be better quality and last longer. However, you may find the better quality ones are more expensive.
- Practicality: Is it has a detachable change mat or an insulated compartment, etc.
- Serviceability
- Size: The size of nanny bags can vary greatly. You can find ones that are smaller and hold only the essentials but not really hold all the things you may need such as change of clothes. It comes down to the actual need you have. You may find that 2 nappy bags may be of use, such as one for those quick dashes and one for the longer days out. But remember the bigger the bag the heavier it is and the more cumbersome.
